Transgender Emergence: Therapeutic Guidelines for Working with Gender-Variant People is a fantastically informative and thorough book. It presents a clinical and theoretical perspective that honors human diversity and acknowledges the role of oppression in the process of gender identity formation.
The book address the needs of gender-variant individuals and their family members, the coming out process, and treatment options. An essential reference for anyone who works with gender-variant people and those who want to understand gender issues in depth. It's a bit academic, but well worth in for those hungry for knowledge.

True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism--For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals by Mildred L. Brown and Chloe Ann Rounsley is a sensitive overview on the experience of being transgender.
Initial chapters explain what transsexuality is, and what it isn’t. She paints a picture of the lonely experience of being a transgendered child and the horrors of an alien puberty. She devotes chapters to transitioning in the workplace and dealing with familes and friends. This book provides support and information for gender variant individuals as well as sensitive and practical advice for their friends and family members.
