Book Reviews

Hello readers.

This book page is still in the beginning phases.  I posted my first "Book Report" on Internal Family Systems and I plan to post reviews and links to psychological books that I recommend.

Why?  For one, this page may direct you to helpful resources.  Knowing about your issues can open up options and possibilities you hadn't considered.

Even if you don't like to read books, you may want to be aware of ideas that influence my thinking and treatment.  Feel free to email me or post comments on my "testimonial" page if you want to recommend psychological books that gave you new insights.

Best wishes,
Jennifer Whitlock

Books about Transgender Issues

I have always been interested in gender issues, even back in the fifth grade, when I read the first issue of Ms Magazine -- you know the one with Wonder Woman on the cover.  Years later, in graduate school, I did a two-semester research project on various categories of crossdressing men.

Recently I have been reading more about the issue, as I have been treating an increasing number of transgender individuals.

I learned of these books through Dr. Lisa O'Connor.  She's a doctor in Stirling, NJ who caters to the LGBT community and has extensive experience managing hormones, conducting individual and family counseling and leading support groups for the trans population.

Click on the icon to the left to find out more about these books.  Keep in mind this website is still under construction, so more books will appear in the future.  I'm also open for recommendations.

In Internal Family Systems Therapy, Richard Schwartz shows how we all contain an internal community of competing sub-personalities, each of which has its own thoughts, temperaments, talents, needs and desires.  They fight for control, bargaining with, deceiving and plotting against each other.  Sometimes the happiness of one causes the misery of another.  He describes the process of creating peace within.  For a more complete "Book Report," click the book icon.
